Fundemental Movement Skills
PARENTS – What we want from you.
Between the ages of 2 & 7 children lay down the foundation s needed to acquire and refine the basic skills of STABILITY, LOCOMOTION and MANIPULATION upon which later abilities such as sporting skills are built. As children develop at different rates it is recommended that a focus on the development of FUNDEMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS should remain throughout physical education and sports training sessions, thereby maintaining a foundation for all skills learning. It is vital that children experience the full range of the skills listed below.

Children between the Ages of 7 & 10 years of age (these years are called the “Skill hungry years”) look for opportunities to increase the range and quality of their movement..Focusing too much on sports specific skills at this age may have negative consequences on a youngsters future development. Research has shown that young children engaged in a varied programme achieved a greater consistancy in competition, experienced a longer athletic life and experienced fewer injuries.
A continued focus on the development of basic Strength, Flexibility, Agility, Speed, and Quickness . Lack of these qualities will never be compensated for by good specialist skills when higher competition is faced in the late teens.
MOVEMENT IN SPORT
TO BECOME A GOOD FOOTBALLER YOU MUST BE ABLE TO MOVE IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS. THIS HELPS IN ALL SPORTS. THE BEST TIME TO LEARN MOVEMENT IS AT A YOUNG AGE AND THIS CAN BE IMPROVED ON AS ONE GETS OLDER. THE BETTER ONE CAN MOVE AND MORE AGILE THEY ARE THE QUICKER THEY PICK UP SPORTS SKILLS AND ARE LESS PRONE TO INJURY AS THEY GET OLDER.
MOVEMENTS WHICH YOU SHOLD PRACTICE AND GET YOUR PARENTS TO HELP OUT WITH ARE.

PARENTS What We Want From You.
We are asking all parents to become a “FMS” (Fundemental Movement Skills) Sponsor of their child. What this entails is time on your behalf.
- Go for brisk walks with you young athlete.
- Go thru the chart over and spend a couple of minutes picking out movements from the chart above and doing them with your child
- Encourage your child to practice his ball skills (Don’t be afraid to play ball with him)
- Motivate your chid by positive encouragement and participation with him
- Have short races (15 – 20 paces) against him to increase his speed
- Play mirror games – he must copy your movements- left/right/ backwords/ forwards/tip the ground/jump in the air (this is also good for you)
These players are the STARS of the FUTURE. The stronger foundation which we at the Club and you as Parents can give, the better chance they have in continuing in their chosen sport for a long time into the future.
GET OUT THERE – MAKE THE EFFORT 10-15MINS 3 TIMES A WEEK
MAKE IT A LIFESTYLE HABIT
BALL SKILLS
To improve as a footballer you must practice with a ball.
- KICKING
- CATCHING
- FIST PASSING
You must practise with both legs. This might be hard at first, but after a while you will be good with both feet.
If you do not have anyone to practise with that is OK, as you only need yourself and a ball.

Practising is up to YOU. The more you practise the better you become
REMEMBER: perfect practice makes perfect
Playing games like CHASE, COPYCAT, Twister. Or any games which require movement (***NOT COMPUTER GAMES***) help to increase your movement skills. – So get outside, get running around, jumping, hopping, skipping, rolling, twisting, turning, kicking, throwing catching.
HAVE FUN
If these movements are practised a few times a week you will see yourself improve dramatically at sport. You will get better at ball skills as a result.
